George Getschow: In the World of Larry McMurtry

The Ramay~Macatee Speaker Series is presented by The Bridge Street History Center.

Join us for a fascinating evening with George Getschow, Pulitzer Prize finalist, award-winning journalist, author, educator, and longtime friend and colleague of legendary Texas writer Larry McMurtry.

McMurtry gave us Lonesome Dove, the Pulitzer Prize-winning epic that became an Emmy-winning television phenomenon, along with The Last Picture Show, Terms of Endearment, Horseman, Pass By, and many other unforgettable works that helped define how America saw Texas and the West.

George Getschow knew the man behind the legend. As writer-in-residence at UNT’s Mayborn School of Journalism, Getschow conducted writing workshops with McMurtry inside his famous Booked Up bookstore in Archer City. The two shared a deep friendship and a passion for books, writing, Texas, and the art of storytelling.

Following McMurtry’s death in 2021, Getschow edited Pastures of the Empty Page, a tribute collection featuring writers reflecting on McMurtry’s life and legacy. He also helped spearhead the creation of the Larry McMurtry Literary Center in Archer City, where he now serves as executive director.

A former Wall Street Journal reporter, bureau chief, page one editor, and Mexico correspondent, Getschow brings a remarkable perspective to the life and work of one of Texas’ most celebrated literary figures.

Come hear the stories behind the legend—from someone who knew Larry McMurtry personally and continues to carry his literary torch.
